Official Statement – Morgan State University
October 4, 2023
Dear Saint Augustine’s University Community,
I write to you today with a heavy heart and deep concern for the safety and well-being of our fellow students and colleagues at Morgan State University. Yesterday evening, an unfortunate incident of gun violence occurred during a crowded homecoming event, leaving four students and another person wounded. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families during this difficult time.
As many of you may know, Morgan State University holds a special place in my heart. I served as the Founding Professor and Community College Leadership Doctoral Program Director. My late husband, Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail, was also a visiting professor at Morgan State. The news of this incident has deeply shaken me, as I know the Morgan State community, under the leadership of their President, my friend and colleague, Dr. David Wilson, is equally dedicated to the success and safety of its students.
I want to assure our entire Saint Augustine’s University community that we stand in solidarity with Morgan State University during this challenging period. We condemn any act of violence that disrupts the peace and security of our campuses. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we come together as a united front, offering support and comfort to those affected by this tragedy.
I extend my deepest gratitude to law enforcement personnel and first responders who swiftly responded, containing the situation and aiding the injured. Their dedication and bravery are commendable.
While authorities have neutralized the immediate threat, we must remain vigilant and prioritize the safety of our community. Our campus security team is reviewing our safety protocols and procedures to ensure we are well-prepared to respond to emergencies. I urge all members of the SAU community to familiarize yourselves with these safety procedures and report any suspicious activity to campus security immediately.
In times like these, we must lean on each other for support. If you or someone you know is impacted by this incident and requires assistance or counseling, please do not hesitate to contact our dedicated Student Services team. They are here to provide guidance and support during difficult times.
Let us keep the Morgan State University community in our thoughts and prayers as they work through this trying period. Together, we can stand firm against violence and ensure our campuses remain safe havens for learning, growth, and community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail
President, Saint Augustine’s University
